Sometime within the next few weeks, I hope to be able to make a trip down to Harrison to see your museum. I've set designed two museums and have done work for three of the Branson museums. Would be open to possibly interviewing with Bill Groninger (President of "Americas Veterans Task Force) to possibly fill a position on the AVTF board of directors? I think we might have an opening coming available in the future, one of our board members has cancer. I think Bill mentioned needing 7 members to complete the board and we have 5 at this time.

My Grandfather was Corliss Briggs Carpenter Sr and was I believe Advertising Manager of the GLOBE AND ANCHOR publication in Galveston Texas in approximately 1920 or 1921. We have a complete set Vol. 1 #1 through their pull out from Galveston. My dad, Corliss Briggs Carpenter Jr. passed in 1977. As his dad and my grandmother, Edna Hahn Carpenter divorced when my dad was only 5 years old, we do not know any relatives on my dad's side. If anyone knows any information about my grandfather we would greatly appreciate hearing from you. My dad was in the army, went to Oknawa (sorry about the spelling) I believe. Thought my grandfather served in the army as well, but after noticing the name GLOBE AND ANCHOR on the publication, think he might have been a Marine.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

Your site is the first USMC site to really recognize the role of the corpsman in service with Marines worldwide. And while I am truly amazed and find the MCLM site extremely gratifying because of its thoroughness in presenting the history of the US Navy Hospital Corps, I found the Fleet Marine Force (FMF) component's historical record to be abridged.
As a graduate of GLAKES, ILL Hosptial Corps "A" School and Fld Med Svc Tech (MOS: 8404), the school that gives you everything under the sun training-wise, it seems better served that the site would give a broader history of FMF service, since service with the Marines separates the men from the boys. It just proves that you can take the man out of the Corps, but you can NEVER take the CORPS out of a corpsman once he's servedx with troops. Aauurrhhaaaaa!

Gy "Red"... It was pleasure meeting you this last weekend at the Poolee function in Harrison. The web site is exceptional, and the MCLM is "OUTSTANDING". WHen I last toured the museum it brought back many memories, both fond rememberances of brothers and places and some not so pleasant, but none-the-less a part of my time in "The Corps" ('65-'75) that I consider to be the best thing I have ever done in my life, including my current 'avocation' of working with kids. I just wanted to thank you and your dad for your efforts in establishing and pursuing the growth of the MCLM, and wish you all the best, and will be happy to help expand this wonderful piece of Marine Corps history in any way that I can. I look forward to the further accomplishments of the MCLM through your efforts. OUTSTANDING, Gunny! Semper Fi.... Dale "Mad Dog" Messmer

While it is not my habit to personally respond to posts in this guest book, I feel that the one below needs addressing.

Mr. Bradley
I share your dismay and frustration; however, I have some questions for you.
Did you contact either this organization or the local VA in order
to submit a SF 180 form for a request for records? Was it filled out properly allowing an efficient record search to be conducted?
Also, please be aware that the Marine Corps is a warfighting organization, not an administrational unit tasked with maintaining historical documentation for the public.
The USMC History and Museum Branch is a grossly overworked and underpaid group of civilian professionals who do the best they can with the limited resources available to them. Did you forward copies of the information you acquired from the French for inclusion in the USMC Archives? If not, why not?
This museum (The Marine Corps Legacy Museum in Harrison, AR), is a non-profit organization that was established to, in a small way, address the problems you speak of for the central regions of the USA. It is also in no way sponsored or maintained by the USMC, or any other federal agency.
It is also important for you to know that there is no state or federal $ in this museum, it was built out of pocket by my father and I, both retired Marines, and we do not pay ourselves for our efforts. AND that the doors of this facility are open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm ALL YEAR LONG. WE have assisted MANY people in acquiring the information they seek, on an international level, at ZERO cost to them as far as remuneration to this organization for our efforts.
It is unfortunate that you had problems, however it is also WRONG for you to rant against the Corps in the manner in which you have in a public venue if you did not exhaust all the avenues available to you first.
It is fortunate that you were able to locate any information in the NPRC. Had he been a soldier, the records would have been lost in the fire they had there.
Like any federal bureaucracy, it takes time to get questions answered from the NPRC, also have you put any thought into how many other requests for like information they were attempting to fulfill at the time that you were asking for yours? What, other than your personal desire for information made your request a National Priority?
We feel lucky when we receive data with a 90-day turn around.
Again, I am sorry that you had problems, however, your father rests among his peers, true heroes all. How many others lay in unmarked graves around the world, or neglected in the cemeteries of this country's cities and towns? I am not eligible to rest among those heroes, regardless of my full career in the Corps, so please don’t speak of “…Eternal torch lights…”.
Also, while the Army and Navy have their heroes, and erect statues and make a grand hoopla about them, we as Marines celebrate our service AS MARINES and memorialize the contributions of our CORPS as opposed to those of any one individual. It may truly be said that our loyalty is to a thing bigger and grander than any one person because we have all helped to make and preserve that thing, much as your father did right along with thousands of other Marines who are unnamed. Furthermore, we as a group are happy with that and would have it no other way.
You would do better to be pleased that:
a) you know where he is buried, and,
b) you were able to acquire the data that you have and,
c) your father was committed to both our freedoms and the Corps to the extent that he laid it on the line in France and then went on to complete 28 years in the U.S. Navy.
Thank you for your opinion. While I disagree with it, (in regards to your disparaging remarks about the U.S. Marine Corps and its, to you, lack of attention to the individuals who have proudly worn our emblem), I spent 22 years of my life ensuring that you could have it.
Curator, MCLM.

My Dad served in world war one, USMC, AEF, Second Division, 4th brigade. Saw action in all of the major sector campaigns - Chateau Theiry, Belleau Woods, march to the Rhine, occupation of Germany, Belgium, wounded, decorated, and on and on. When it came time for me to finally research his contribution to the USA (he also served in WWII - USN, 28 additional years) I could find no data from the USMC, their archives, Quantico, USMC Washington, nothing! I finally had to contact my local congressman and after several attempts, he got through the red tape of the civil service nonsense and retreived some of my Dad's records from the National Archives. I actually obtained more information from the French eembassy in D.C. than my own country! Seems that the USMC served under French command for a period of time in WWI. Why do I write to all who will read this guest book. IT IS SAD THAT OUR BOYS, FATHERS, UNCLES AND THE LIKE ( AND NOW DAYS - THE WOMEN) GO INTO HARMS WAY, BECOME FALLEN HEROS - AND OUR LAZY ASS GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES AND their upper management CANNOT SEE THEIR WAY CLEAR TO MAINTAIN PROPER RECORDS OF THESE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN; AND A SYSTEM FOR EASY RETREIVAL. THIS IS A DISGRACE TO OUR FALLEN HEROS AND THERE SHOULD BE AN INVESTIGATION AS TO WHY WE CANNOT EASILY RETREIVE THE RECORDS WHEN THE NEED ARISES. These records record the deed of our loved ones and most importantly, their health records so vital to the surviving family membembers. SHAME ON THE MARINES AND SHAME ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. USMC - DON'T BRAG ABOUT THE CORPS UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE MEMORIALS OR STATUES ERECTED TO THEIR NOBLE CONTRIBUTION. MY DAD LIES IN ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY - NO ETERNAL TORCH LIGHTS HIS WAY!!!

Just to update on the Museum that Havlock never got. A Tourism/event center with a MC display. There is a RF-4B and A-4M restored outside. The Bi-plane is hanging from the ceiling inside. The F-9F-F Panther is outside but needs sum repairs. There is a unit display case and each unit provides items and history for display each quarter another shows the time line for Cherry Point and Havelock. I also restored a AV-8A ejecton seat and one from the A-4 for display (donated by NADEP). A RF-4B is now on display at the "O" club and and EA-6A on the conner across from the "Q-2" hanger (now home to Q-1 & Q-3).
